What if history didn’t quite play out the way we know it? What would stay the same? What would change? Even in a world where Elves and Humans coexist, there are secrets. Not all the old legends are accurate, but neither are they false. Hidden among the Humans are the Therians, those gifted with the ability to shift into beasts. How long they will remain unseen by Human eyes depends on how well they adhere to their code of life and honor – The Therian Way.

When secrecy is vital to survive among Humans and Elves, the Therian Way offers balance. The Fringe, a militant group of discontented Therians, threaten to expose their race to Mankind. It falls to General Baran to track down and remove the Fringe Nest before time runs out. Who can he trust when the fate of his people lies in the Tiger’s paw?

Tiger’s Paw originally started out as an entry in a short short story contest in 2013, which is when Baran first made his presence known and of course he wasn’t content with just the brief glimpse that turned into the first chapter of the book. The first draft revealed that there was a lot going on in this new story world that couldn’t be told in just one story. And The Therian Way was born.

There is a lot more to come in the world of Therians, Elves, and Humans with Book One releasing this winter.

I hope that you will enjoy coming to know Baran and his world starting with Tiger’s Paw.

A Tracker.

Why a Therian Tracker had come after me was the question of the hour. Biting back a frustrated growl, I gazed down at her. Either she was the Fringe recruiter or she was about to ruin four months of undercover work. I intended to find out. We would need to talk in private, though, too many Elven and Therian ears around who might overhear us in spite of the nearly deafening music. I nodded to the narrow door to my left and she preceded me, too confident in her mannerism. That’s right, little mouse, let’s see who sent you into my trap…

The above is an excerpt from my WIP novella, Tiger’s Paw, the prequel to The Therian Way, my urban fantasy series. This entry is a direct continuation from last week’s, which you can read here. This is also my last entry for the foreseeable future since this is the end of the first chapter. Maybe I will start posting snippets from the opening chapter of the next book by January.

Nevertheless, this had to be done to protect both the Therians and the Elves in the long term.

Movement on the other side of the room caught my attention. I watched, testing the air, as a tall, lithe woman wove her way through the crowd toward me. She moved like a Therian, but I couldn’t catch a scent to identify which branch she belonged to, only the scent of cinnamon and vanilla clinging to her, and she wasn’t using her power in such a way that I could narrow it down beyond the fact that she was definitely among the predators. She sauntered up to me, her lips curving in a slight smile that did not reach her hazel eyes. If this was the Fringe recruiter, it was no wonder so many of the unmated males were falling for it. A pretty smile and promises of more than she said would be more than enough for some of the young males. Then, she twitched the front of her black leather jacket aside just enough for me to see the emblem stitched onto the lower left side of her tan shirt: a paw set within a circlet of ash leaves.

Tiger’s Paw Snippet – Weekend Writing Warriors – Part 11

Eleventh entry for the #8sunday Weekend Writing Warriors blog hop –

A woman with all the characteristics of a typical Elf, slight ethereal glow, doe-like eyes, and slightly pointed ears, brushed her hand against my arm. Baring my teeth slightly, I allowed her to catch the faintest glimpse of the tiger within. Her emerald green eyes widened and I could smell her fear spike sharply before she whirled away, vanishing back into the crowd. Other Therians watched her leave then cast searching gazes toward me until I glared, forcing those who considered interfering to back down for fear of a confrontation that would injure innocents. But, there were at least six Therians who merely hid their smiles of approval from the Elves surrounding them. I’d spent the last four months scaring Elf maidens as a part of my cover, a Therian who wasn’t quite content with the Therian Way, hoping to be approached by the Fringe recruiter. So far the distasteful action had yet to gain me what I wanted, the recruiter. It was not in keeping with the Therian Way to be cruel to those who were weaker than oneself…I should have been protecting them instead.

Tiger’s Paw Snippet – Weekend Writing Warriors – Part 10

Tenth entry for the #8sunday Weekend Writing Warriors blog hop –

Long years of training permitted me to remain relaxed, focused solely on the King and his Council as Michael breathed down my neck. “And just who do you propose we send, Baran?”

“Myself.”

The pounding music made my head ache and the colored contacts I was wearing to hide my Therian gold eyes were still uncomfortable even after four months of using them. It was an inconvenience to resort to such measures to hide among Humans and a few Therians were bold enough to forgo the mandated contacts as they mingled with the other patrons of the Blue Star. Golden eyes were always noticed, but the Elves had long ago aided in explaining them away as an aftereffect of their marriages to non-Elves. Still, it was unwise to draw such attention even in a nightclub.

Tiger’s Paw Snippet – Weekend Writing Warriors – Part 9

Ninth entry for the #8sunday Weekend Writing Warriors blog hop –

Humans run it, but Elves go there and Therians go as well. Someone is approaching Therians and convincing them to go fringe. I propose that a Therian go to the Blue Star and wait until he is approached, then we will have the contact agent. If the Therian can persuade this agent that he is considering going fringe, perhaps we will catch an even bigger prey, the head of the Fringe movement.”

A snarl rose from the back of the room. I didn’t bother to turn as Michael, one of the Lion commandants who were still surly about their perceived loss of station, stalked up behind me. Much as I disliked having him at my back, I would not acknowledge that I thought him a threat by turning to face him. The surly commandant would enjoy that too much.
